MADISON (WKBT) — The Wisconsin DNR along with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced they are accepting bids for the collection and disposal of firefighting foam containing PFAS chemicals.

Wisconsin’s 2021-23 biennium budget allows $1 million to administer a collection and disposal program for PFAS-containing firefighting foams in the state. There are approximately 25,000 gallons of foam identified for collection and disposal.

PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of human-made chemicals used in numerous products, including Class B firefighting foams used to extinguish flammable liquid fires. These chemicals do not break down easily in the environment and can cause negative health impacts in humans.
