Anthony Webb's colleagues did everything they could to save him but he later died of his injuries in hospital, an inquest opening heard

A man who died after his head collided with a roller shutter door while he was at work has been named. Anthony Webb, 59, died on Tuesday, September 6, at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, a day after the incident at Gardners print manufacturers in Pontprennau on the morning of Monday, September 5.

An inquest opening at Pontypridd Coroners' Court heard how the roller shutter door which Mr Webb was trying to fix swung and hit him in the head with such force he collapsed to the ground. Colleagues administered emergency CPR and rang the emergency services and minutes later paramedics arrived as well as officers from South Wales Police.

Mr Webb, of Pontypridd and originally from Church Village, was then transferred to UHW where he died from his injuries. Dr Stephen Leadbeatter carried out a post-mortem examination on September 14. He advised that a medical cause of death could be recorded as blunt force head injury including a left-side skull fracture with a laceration to the head.

Assistant coroner for South Wales Central Sarah-Jane Richards adjourned the inquest to collect further evidence of the circumstances surrounding Mr Webb’s death. A new date is yet to be set.

A joint investigation has been launched by South Wales Police and the Health and Safety Executive. A statement from South Wales Police said: "At around 10.45am on Monday, September 5, emergency services were called to a unit in Pontprennau following a report of an industrial incident.

“A 59-year-old man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales with life-threatening injuries and he has since died of his injuries. Next of kin and HM Coroner has been informed. A joint investigation by South Wales Police and the Health and Safety Executive is continuing."

Following Mr Webb’s death Richard Courtney, managing director at Gardners, paid tribute to a “close friend and colleague”. He said: "All of us at Gardners are devastated by this tragic accident.

“He was a close friend and colleague, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this sad and difficult time. The incident is being treated as an industrial accident and we are fully cooperating with the HSE and police on an ongoing basis.”
