A plan to escape police by lighting a garage on fire after crashing into it ultimately backfired for one man in Kitimat yesterday.

RCMP were initially called out to the home on Swan Street to conduct a wellness check on a man who was already known to police.

But as they arrived, the man reportedly attempted to leave his home in his vehicle.

Officers then used a police truck in an effort to block the vehicle from leaving the garage.

As a result of being blocked, the man reportedly crashed his vehicle through the garage door, before continuing to crash around inside.

Moments later, the garage became engulfed in a fire which police believe was started by the man intentionally.

Security footage taken by neighbor Charmaine Scodane shows the suspect’s vehicle unsuccessfully attempting to ram its way out, despite the police truck.

A second video also shows the garage fully engulfed in flames, before police can be seen arresting the man, and fire trucks arriving on scene.

No decision has been made as of yet as to what charges the man may face, but the street was closed off until around midnight as fire crews fought the blaze.
