POTSDAM — A new village treasurer will step into the position starting Sept. 12.

The village board approved the mayoral appointment of Isabelle Gates-Shult of Parameter Road to the position at their meeting Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The board approved a new deputy clerk appointment, gave the nod to hiring a new fire truck driver and took care of other business at the meeting as well.

Gates-Shult will take over the job of village treasurer from former treasurer Cara Adams who resigned from the post on Aug. 5.

Adams, who previously served as deputy village clerk in Canton, was appointed to the post in July 2021 for an annual salary of $45,000.

Adams recently accepted a position as district treasurer with Potsdam Central School.

Once on the job, Gates-Shult will fill out the unexpired term left vacant by Adams which ends Dec. 5, 2023.

Gates-Shult’s annual salary will be $63,000.

The board also approved the appointment of Georgine Scott of Madrid to the deputy clerk/registrar position left vacant by Heather Wells’ departure.

Scott will serve the rest of Wells’ unexpired term, from Sept. 6, 2022 to Dec. 5, 2023.

She will be paid an annual salary of $43,500.

In other business, the board approved a probationary appointment of Matthew Kroeger of Canton to the position of fire vehicle driver with the Potsdam Fire Department.

Members of the department and village residents recently spoke out at a village board meeting last month urging them to hire a new driver after a retirement left one of the four drivers spots open.

There had previously been a discussion among village officials of perhaps dissolving the position instead of staffing it.

The board at that meeting pledged to hire a new driver following calls by department members and the public to do so.

At the meeting Sept. 6, the village board also agreed to match $7,000 in ARPA funds that the town of Potsdam is giving to the Potsdam Fire Department.

In other business, the board approved a contract with Eric York to update the village website, and to sell as surplus a 2010 Jeep previously used by code enforcement and a 2015 Ford Explorer used by the village police department.
